Histoire

L'album atteignit la cinquième place des charts au Royaume-Uni[5] et la 75e au Billboard[6]. En 2006, le magazine Time l'inclut dans sa sélection des 100 plus grands albums de tous les temps[7]. Dans le classement des 500 meilleurs albums de tous les temps établi par le magazine Rolling Stone l'album est classé trente-cinquième[8].

Il s'agit d'un concept album à la trame assez vague. Bowie y incarne Ziggy Stardust, star androgyne du futur, accompagné par les Spiders from Mars, groupe composé du guitariste Mick Ronson, du bassiste Trevor Bolder et du batteur Mick Woodmansey. Rick Wakeman au clavecin et Dana Gillespie aux chœurs sont venus prêter main forte à David sur la chanson It Ain't Easy.
