Apparemment dérivé du titre allemand d’un papier de 1947 du neurologiste Joachim Bodamer décrivant la maladie, intitulé Die Prosop-Agnosie, dérivé du grec ancien πρόσωπον, prosopon (« visage ») et αγνωσία, agnosia (« ignorance »).
