    La principale ville du district est Northallerton, où siège le conseil de district. Les principaux villes et villages du district sont Bedale, Thirsk, Great Ayton, Stokesley et Easingwold.

    Le district a été créé le par le Local Government Act 1972. Il est issu de la fusion du district urbain de Northallerton avec le district rural de Bedale, le district rural d'Easingwold, le district rural de Northallerton et une partie des districts ruraux de Thirsk et Croft.

    Le nom du district fait référence aux Hambleton Hills (en), dans le parc national des North York Moors, à l'est du district.
