Zitkala-Sa

Zitkála-Šá (22 février 1876 – 26 janvier 1938) (dakota: prononcé [z i t ˈ k a l a ˈ ʃ a], se traduisant par « Oiseau rouge ») [1], aussi connue sous le nom que des missionnaires lui ont donné, Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, est une écrivain, éditrice, musicienne, enseignante et militante politique lakota.

Avec l'Américain William F. Hanson, Zitkala-Ša écrit le libretto et les chansons du The Sun Dance Opera, (1913), le premier opéra amérindien (en), composé en style romantique et basé sur des thèmes sioux et utes[2]^,[3].

Elle est la cofondatrice, en 1926, du Conseil national des Indiens américains (en), un groupe de lobby pour les droits civils et pour le droit à la citoyenneté américaine. Elle sert en tant que présidente jusqu'en 1938[4].

Postérité

Elle est enterrée au cimetière national d'Arlington[5].

Le cratère vénusien Bonnin a été nommé en son honneur[6].
