Richard Tarnas

Richard Theodore Tarnas, né le à Genève (Suisse), est un historien de la culture et un professeur de philosophie et psychologie au California Institute of Integral Studies de San Francisco. Il est l'auteur de The Passion of the Western Mind (1991) et de Cosmos and Psyche (2006).

Biographie

Richard Tarnas naît en à Genève. Ses parents sont américains. Son père, également nommé Richard Tarnas, est avocat d'État, ex-président du Michigan Federal Bar Association et professeur de Droit. Sa mère, María Lou, était professeure. Il grandit à Détroit. En 1968, il entre à Harvard. Il en sort diplômé en 1972.

Pendant dix ans, il vit et travaille à l'Institut Esalen, Big Sur (Californie), aux côtés de Joseph Campbell, Gregory Bateson, Huston Smith et Stanislav Grof. Il obtient son doctorat en philosophie du Saybrook Institute en 1976. De 1980 à 1990, il écrit The Passion of the Western Mind (« La passion de l'esprit occidental »), une histoire de la pensée occidentale qui devient un best seller[réf. souhaitée].

Tarnas est connu pour ses travaux intégratifs en épistémologie et cosmologie[réf. souhaitée]. Il cherche à intégrer religion et science, âme et intellect, savoir antique et raison moderne, en une recherche qui tend à comprendre le passé et à créer le futur[Interprétation personnelle ?][réf. nécessaire].

L'astronaute Susan Helms cite The Passion of the Western Mind comme un des cinq livres qui ont inspiré sa carrière d'astronaute[1].
