Derek Price

Derek John de Solla Price, né le à Leyton et mort le , est un physicien anglais, spécialiste de l'histoire des sciences et de la science de l'information. Il est considéré comme le « père » de la scientométrie[1].

Biographie

Derek Price est né le à Leyton. Il a fait des études de mathématiques et de physique, notamment un PhD en physique expérimentale. En 1947, il se marie avec Ellen Hjorth et devient professeur à Singapour. En 1954 il reçoit un PhD d'histoire des sciences, et en 1960 devient professeur de cette discipline à l'université Yale, poste qu'il ne quittera plus. La même année il crée l'Institute for Scientific Information avec Eugene Garfield. Il est ensuite reconnu internationalement pour ses travaux sur la science[2].

Il meurt le à Londres d'une crise cardiaque[2].

En 1984, Price reçut le Prix de la recherche de l'ASIS à titre posthume pour ses contributions exceptionnelles dans le champ de la science de l'information[3].
