Ottar de Hålogaland

Ottar (Ohthere en vieil anglais) est un aventurier viking du IXe siècle originaire du Hålogaland.

Ottar organisa plusieurs expéditions maritimes exploratoires à partir du port de Skiringssal, en Norvège. Au Nord-Est, il navigua jusqu'à la mer de Barents, puis atteignit la Mer Blanche et rencontra les Samis. Il poursuivit son aventure jusqu'au Bjarmaland.

Vers 890, il navigua jusqu'en Angleterre où il rencontra le roi du Wessex Alfred le Grand dans sa capitale de Winchester. Celui-ci fit écrire le récit de ses voyages.
