L'histoire
Cavor, un scientifique, met au point la cavorite, un métal révolutionnaire qui crée l'apesanteur, avec lequel il construit un astronef. Accompagné par Bedford, un jeune aventurier voulant faire fortune, il se dirige vers la Lune où ils découvrent la civilisation souterraine des Sélénites.

Postérité
La cavorite fait l'objet d'allusions et de reprises dans plusieurs œuvres de fiction postérieures. Elle constitue notamment un élément majeur de l'intrigue du premier tome de la bande dessinée La Ligue des gentlemen extraordinaires (1999) d'Alan Moore[1].
