Produit par Alan Tarney, ex-bassiste des Shadows , le disque se vendra à près de huit millions d'exemplaires dans le monde, atteignant la 15e place aux États-Unis et la 7e en France (avec plus d'1 500 000 exemplaires vendus). Le premier titre extrait "Take on me" approchera les sept millions d'exemplaires (1 500 000 exemplaires vendus en France), se classant notamment n°1 aux USA.

Il est cité dans l'ouvrage de référence de Robert Dimery Les 1001 albums qu'il faut avoir écoutés dans sa vie.
